TWO plants, one per 12-14" deck pot. Sandy lean mix with 30% perlite or coarse sand. NO fertilizer ever - rich soil weakens lavender. Full sun on the deck. Grosso is Zone 5 hardy in-ground, but small-pot root mass freezes solid in Zone 6B - garage 35-50F overwinter Oct-Apr batched with the lotus, tuberose, and gladiolus routine.

VarietiesTwo lavender plantings on the property. Hidcote English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) lines the south edge of the strawberry strip as a compact 11-plant row at 24 in centers. Grosso lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) is an 8-plant set, 6 forming a ribbon along the south edge of the wildflower meadow and 2 in deck pots alongside the curry leaf, mint and tulsi.
WaterLean and dry. 1" per week Y1 while roots take, then drought-tolerant. Overwatering kills more lavender than cold does. Pots dry faster - check daily in heat but still water only when the top 1" is dry.
FeedNO fertilizer. Lavender prefers lean soil; rich/fertilized soil pushes floppy foliage and weakens essential-oil production and winter hardiness. Sandy well-drained mix at planting (top-dress with coarse sand or fine gravel around crowns if soil is heavy). No compost in the planting hole.
PestsMostly pest-free thanks to aromatic oils. Watch for spittlebug foam in early summer (harmless, hose off). Root rot from wet feet is the real killer - drainage matters more than any other factor.
TipsPLANTING: sandy lean mix; 18-24" spacing in-ground; 12-14" pots with 30%+ perlite/sand. PRUNE: light shape after the late-Jun flush; harder shape mid-Aug, never later (winter hardening) and never into the bare woody base (no regrowth). WINTER (6B): Grosso is Z5-hardy - the 6 meadow-edge plants stay put; the 2 deck pots garage-overwinter 35-50F (small-pot rootballs freeze solid), batched with the late-Oct routine. POT UPDATE May 27, 2026: both deck pots went in with 100% native blueberry-slope soil - workable IF watered only when dry to 2" down; add 2 tbsp garden lime per pot (native 5.7 toward lavender's 6.5-7.5). Skip the Moisture Control mix - water-retentive, the opposite of what lavender wants.
